Background

  • Temporal cartographic animation is a mature field
  • Animations deal with communicating; historical events or other spatio-temporal phenomena
    • Idea is to communicate a history of event(s)
    • Animations rarely portray this history at any given time of the animation
    • Most commonly animations portray the current event at that given time (i.e. non-temporal)
    • However they do it in sequence so it becomes a history

Idea

Explore and discover new types of animations that portray:

  • Temporal dimension
    • Past events (i.e. the ones already seen)
    • Future events (i.e. the ones not seen) - should probably only indicate the values briefly
    • Both past and future events at the same time.
  • Visual dimension (ideas)
    • Choropleth "bar"
      • "Progress indicator/bar" with the colour of the progress bar relative to the colour of the events that happened at that time.
    • Retained pie-charts
      • Displaying pie-charts that happened/about to happen at a subtle way
      • Could be cluttered - need to overcome this
  • Interactivity
    • Pop-up historical view when hovering over concepts (i.e. star-layout of pie-charts, choropleth bar etc)
    • Parallel coordinates, time-graph etc.

Application

Find something useful for this....

  • COSTT?
  • Museums and similar
    • Should test different user-groups
    • The "NTNU museum" at Kalvskinnet?
